Dal 2014, il Programma Quadro per la Ricerca e l’Innovazione, Horizon 2020, contiene uno strumento dedicato al finanziamento dell’innovazione delle PMI. Lo SME Instrument ha ricevuto oltre 20.000 applicazioni, con 500 milioni investiti in oltre 1.400 progetti.
I progetti nell’ambito delle energie rinnovabili (solar, wind and biomass) e dell’efficienza energetica ammontano al 40% degli investimenti sostenuti dallo SME Instrument nel campo energetico. I primi tre paesi sono Spagna, Italia e Regno Unito, con la maggior parte dei progetti finanziati. I progetti energetici rappresentano il 14% di tutti i progetti SME Instrument di Horizon 2020. Considerando le statistiche per Paese, le PMI spagnole hanno ricevuto 23 milioni di euro per 69 progetti, seguite dalle aziende italiane con 17 milioni di euro per 49 progetti e da quelle inglesi, con 12 milioni per 35 progetti.
Le prossime cut-off dates per i topics dello Sme Instrument fase 1 e fase 2 sono fissate rispettivamente al 15/02/2017 ed al 06/04/2017:

- SMEInst-06-2016-2017 Accelerating market introduction of ICT solutions for Health, Well-Being and Ageing Well;
- SMEInst-07-2016-2017 Stimulating the innovation potential of SMEs for sustainable and competitive agriculture, forestry, agri-food and bio-based sectors;
- SMEInst-08-2016-2017 Supporting SMEs efforts for the development – deployment and market replication of innovative solutions for blue growth;
- SMEInst-09-2016-2017 Stimulating the innovation potential of SMEs for a low carbon and efficient energy system;
- SMEInst-10-2016-2017 Small business innovation research for Transport and Smart Cities Mobility;
- SMEInst-11-2016-2017 Boosting the potential of small businesses in the areas of climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials;
- SMEInst-12-2016-2017 New business models for inclusive, innovative and reflective societies;
- SMEInst-13-2016-2017 Engaging SMEs in security research and development.
